Journeyman Distillery Update

Gosh its only been six months since we opened the doors at Journeyman Distillery but it feels like years have passed and so much has been accomplished. We now have seven products available here at Journeyman: Red Arrow Vodka, Bilberry Black Hearts Gin, Road’s End Rum, Buggy Whip Whiskey, Ravenswood Rye, Featherbone Bourbon, and Silver Cross Whiskey. In addition we are still offering tours every Saturday and will be expanding the tours this summer. Sign up for tours at www.journeymandistillery.com “events”. We are excited to enter our first spring/summer season here at Journeyman in which we will also be offering food! Additionally we will be offering extended summer hours. Tuesday-Thursday 12-10, Friday and Saturday 12-11, Sunday and Monday 12-10. These hours will begin May 21st. We’ve recently hired Jenn Moore and Josh Thayer both formerly of the Stray Dog. Josh will be heading up our kitchen this year and will be offering small plate appetizers along with bar snacks. Jenn will be our bar manager and look to expand our cocktail menu and events. Distribution is going strong as well. Journeyman fans can now find our products in Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana. We are looking to expand to Georgia and Missouri this summer as well.

Events: We have a grand event we are calling Corsets, Whips, and Whiskey. A celebration of our nation, whiskey, and the history of the featherbone factory. Corsets, Whips, and Whiskey will take place from 5-11 Saturday June 30th. We will be offering all you can eat pig roast and sides along with one cocktail and a live performance by Mike Kennedy and the concerns. $12 for the event and $16 day of. More building!! Journeyman Distillery is adding a 1,000 sq foot deck and bar for this summer! Additionally please ask about our second floor renovations. Journeyman is in the process of adding a second floor event space and bar to accommodate large parties of 300+

    Congratulations on your endeavors ! I just saw you on WNDU news. I’ll plan to being my friends from Scotland for a tour this summer when they arrive. (I want to try your holy water, too!)

        I bought botlte #481 on a whim and was extremely impressed. Strong hints of butterscotch on the nose, very smooth on the palate, with a mellow spiciness in the finish. I was very pleased to say the least.Went back to the liquor store and bought botlte #444. Unimpressive. very harsh as other people have mentioned previously. Still hints of vanilla and caramel, but only vague traces accompanied by a strong and overbearing presence of alcohol harshness.I guess this was an interesting experience for me experiencing the possible differences between barrels of the same vintage.

    It’s great to see things moving forward for you guys! My wife and I stopped in (our 3rd or 4th visit) to pick up some more whiskey and are stoked about the Corsets Whips and Whiskey event at the end of June. We are trying to make some arrangements to stay over that night. It would be great if you could figure out some way to drive people home (or say to the Lakeside Inn) that night so we can fully enjoy ourselves and be safe on the road.

    Look forward to spending some time on the back patio enjoying your fine spirits this summer!

      Thanks so much for your support of the distillery and our first annual Corsets, Whips, and Whiskey event! The safety of our patrons is always of great concern. I’ve actually been in contact with a local tour company to see if there is a way they might be able to offer a shuttle service. Details will be provided if we are able to arrange a service.

        That would be awesome if you could figure out the transportation piece. Maybe talk with Dev at the Lakeside to see if you could coop on a weekend deal? It could be a win win for both places. I bet I could get a couple of other couples signed up as well.

        And keep up the good work – love the Silver Cross Whiskey we just picked up, although the Rye is excellent as well!

          I had not seen the Four Roses brand for sale in many years until I entered it in the copumter. What a delightful surprise to find it still being made. Brought back a lot of old and pleasant memories.

        Look, The JD Single Barrel is 6-7 years old, unlike Gentleman Jack which is 4 yrs old. Now, being a slgnie barrel, the taste will vary somewhat. Nonetheless, I’m quite satisfied. Frankly, I enjoy it as much as Woodford Reserve and it’s just as good as any , say 10 year old slgnie malt. Just remember corn is naturally sweeter than barley ( think high-fructose corn syrup), so it’s a bit easier to drink than Scotch ( though I love a good slgnie malt too). The real question is will theGeorge Dickel Single Barrel be as good?

      My experience was silaimr to Jon’s. I just got a bottle of the 2000 Single Barrel from my local BevMo, and after tasting it, I’m disappointed. All of the honey, vanilla, caramel, and citrus-y flavors are there, but so is a harsh bitterness, which I find unpleasant. There’s also a weird background flavor, sort of like the ester-y smell of rotting oranges, sort of like turpentine. Granted, it’s a mild undercurrent, but enough the throw the balance of this bourbon way off for me; my palate gets tricked into expecting sweet and floral flavors, only to be fooled by the spirit’s actual astringency and bitterness. Not bad stuff, but not that good, either.Chris, if you get a chance to sample from other bottles (or barrels, as it were), would you let us know if any of your thoughts have changed? I’m curious to know if Barrel no. 1 is an anomaly.The specs on my bottle:Barreled: 3/30/09Barrel no. 132Bottled: 11/10/09

    Drove up from Indiana on a whim after a recommendation from my sis. Caleb, behind the bar, was happy to share his knowledge and made dinner and learning about the distilling process a delight. Keep up the customer-friendly service and the stellar spirits!
